The future of lighting for the home is all about LED. LEDs use significantly less energy and last longer than incandescent bulbs. By 2027, widespread use of LEDs in the U.S. could save the country more than $30 billion at today’s electricity prices, per the Department of Energy.

Here are three reasons why homeowners should be switched on to LEDs.

  1. Cost

When LED replacement bulbs first came on the market, they cost as much as $30 per bulb; however, tech improvements and widespread availability has dramatically decreased costs, with today's average bulb costing $8! Simply using energy-efficient bulbs in the five most used light fixtures in the home could save $75 per year in electrical costs.

2. Variety

LEDs are available in a variety of shapes, designs and sizes. For lighting fixtures with exposed bulbs, consider a vintage-inspired LED option. LED bulbs and fixtures are also ideal for outdoor applications, reducing maintenance and providing energy savings for extended nighttime usage.

3. Output

Light output and color temperature should be considered when selecting bulbs and LEDs offer a range of options. There are three output measurements for each bulb: lumens, watts and kelvin. Lumens express brightness, watts measure how much power or electricity is used to power the bulb, while color temperature is measured in kelvins. When using LED, a 2700K-3000K bulb will deliver a warm color with a yellow tint, similar to incandescent lighting. A 4000K+ color temperature is a bluish, bright white, resembling natural daylight. Ferguson lighting experts recommend selecting bulbs with color temperatures at the warm end of the color spectrum – between 2700K-3000K – for sufficient illumination and a good balance of light.
